Creating Clarity

Sometimes it is extremely important to rise above the clouds so we can see the horizon and get more clarity on the direction we want to go. We need to get clear on our vision and it can be very hard to do when we are in the fog of our over committed and distracted lives.

Ask yourself these 3 questions:

  1. What am I doing that is working that I should do more of?
  2. What am I doing that is not working that I should do less of?
  3. Where do I want to be in 3 years and how do I plan to get there?

The last question is why most professionals need coaching. We need a road map and an accountability partner to help us navigate the waters and stay on track.

One of my favorite exercises is from Dan Sullivan at Strategic Coach. I have used this with clients, sales professionals, executives, business associates, my coaching clients, my children and even my friends. This is a great question to ask because it focuses the attention on them, not on you. It helps them to envision a bigger future for themselves, helps them connect with their emotions, and sets you up to help them achieve their goals.

“If we were meeting here three years from today, looking back over those three years, what has to have happened during that period for you to feel happy about your progress?”

A few years ago I asked my daughter this same question…”If we were sitting here 3 years from now and you are preparing to go off to college, what would have had to happen during that period for the two of us to have a close, trusted relationship?” The result was incredible. She told me exactly what she needed from me. She needed me to trust her more. She needed me to give her some uninterrupted time and to not be distracted by my work. She needed me to let go of the reigns some and give her more ability to make her own decisions and possibly make a mistake. It was so eye opening.

I encourage you to use these strategies to expand your horizon, get clear on your vision and create the success you deserve in your life!
